About me and my music
Welcome to my website. Here you can explore my music and the ideas behind it.
I create original music for the harp, inspired by friendship, family, locality and landscape, mainly based in the borderland area of mid-Wales where I grew up.
I lived at the foot of the Breidden, with long family connections up and down the Tanat Valley. With their ancient trees and historic sites, these are landscapes that resonate with an atmosphere that feels impossibly old, timeless, ancient. These are all places where myth and legend abound, places with a story. Sparking off endless conversations between me and my harp, they have been a huge inspiration for the narrative style of music I create.
Coming from a large extended family of musicians, I grew up hearing all kinds of music, from opera to skiffle, and most musical forms in between. But the cadence of Welsh music was always somehow in the air, as a timeless backdrop. It was there in the melodies of folk music, hymns, the harmonies of a male voice choir, and there in the Tanat Valley it wafted from the bar in my grandparents’ pub as closing time approached…
Creating a piece of music can feel quite mysterious. Where does it come from? Who knows! But here, among very many other influences, are the well-springs for what I write.
